In this case we reached out to our friends at WC Lathe Werks and had some shift knobs made specially for us. First off, we like titanium shift knobs. Titanium has excellent heat rejection so it although it does get hot in the summer and cold in the winter, it comes back to skin temperature quickly. It also has a nice mass not super heavy

Once again we have an example of a product that we knew what we wanted but we just couldn't find it on the market. In this case we reached out to our friends at WC Lathe Werks and had some shift knobs made specially for us.

First off, we like titanium shift knobs. Titanium has excellent heat rejection so it although it does get hot in the summer and cold in the winter, it comes back to skin temperature quickly. It also has a nice mass -- not super-heavy like stainless steel, but not as light as Delrin/copolymer knobs. It does not corrode and it is hypoallergenic. Of course titanium is notoriously difficult to machine, which means this isn't going to be a cheap shift knob. But we know what we like, and we think it's worth it.

Titanium also has the attractive property that when you heat it in the presence of oxygen, it develops beautiful colors on the surface. In the case we specified the knob have a gradient from raw titanium at the bottom, through gold, then purple up to deep blue on top. It's lovely.

For the shape, we wanted a simple ball knob design. It's not a light bulb shape, nor does it have a collar on the bottom. It's a sphere. It's elegant. Timeless. Keeping with the simplicity idea, we made this knob so the threads are cut directly into the metal knob. There's no fussy adapters to lose or get stuck on your car or inside the knob. (Ask us how we know this can happen...)

Finally, we wanted a shift pattern on top of the shift knob. We have several cars we switch between, and you probably do too. We don't want to have to guess at where reverse is when we're still on the way to that morning coffee, so we had the 6MT shift pattern laser engraved into the top of the shift knob. A set screw hidden inside the knob allows you to adjust where the knob ends up so the shift pattern can be oriented correctly.

The knob threads directly on to any six-speed manual WRX or WRX STI transmission, and is counter-sunk to accept the six-speed reverse lockout mechanism. It measures 51mm/2" diameter.  9.5 ounces (270g).

Care notes: The titanium oxide finish is hard and scratch resistant, but it can scratch during normal use from hard objects like rings, and we cannot prevent that nor will we accept warranty returns for scratches or other finish issues after purchase. Oils from your skin can also change the appearance of the knob temporarily, but that can be cleaned off with isopropyl alcohol and a soft cloth. Do not attempt to polish the titanium oxide finish. Do not attempt to apply clear coat to the titanium.
